Sustainable Agriculture & Permaculture Course

COURSE CONTENT:

 

MONDAY

7:30AM Breakfast

8:30AM Introductions

Definition of terms: organic, agroecology, permaculture, organic, biodynamic

Examine: Problems with industrial chemical agriculture, monoculture, burning etc.

Practical: Tour of the main house area, dry toilets, bicipump, bicigrinder and blender solar dryer, raised beds, etc.

12:00PM Lunch

Examine: Principles of Agroecology

Practical: Soil preparation

6:00PM Dinner

7:30PM Video: The Future of Food

 

Tuesday

7:30AM Breakfast

Examine: The value of organic matter in the soil,, theory of composting

Practical: Urban composting (3 systems)

12:00PM Lunch

Examine: Hot compost and fast methods

Practical: Tour of composting and vermiculture (worm culture) areas

6:00PM Dinner

7:30PM Video: The Power of Community

 

Wednesday

7:30AM Breakfast

Practical: Tour of the garden and hot compost making.

12:00PM Lunch

Examine: Mulch and green manures

Practical: Mulching and worms

6:00PM Dinner

7:30PM Video: “Home”

 

Thursday

7:30AM Breakfast

Examine: Rotation and association of crops, planning

Practical: Observation of associations and plant families

12:00PM Lunch

Examine: Permaculture

Practical: Observation of animals in Permaculture, Food forests, swales etc.

Optional fun activity

6:00PM Dinner

7:30PM Video: The Principles of Permaculture

 

Friday

7:30AM Breakfast

Examine: Moon influences in agriculture

Practical: Seed planting, transplanting, mounding and thinning,

12:00PM Lunch

Examine: Seeds: saving good seeds, Pest and disease management

Practical: Recognition of pests and diseases.

Fun optional activities: Chocolate making, hike to the lookout, hike to giant tree, crafts

 

Trainers

Nicola Mears-(owner of the farm) New Zealander with 30 years of experience in Sustainable agriculture and training. Trained in inspection of organic farms in Ecuador.
