Whale Watching
Don`t miss seeing the humpback whales off the
coast of Ecuador between July and September..
Between July and September each
year, these acrobatic humpback whales makes the long 8000 km long trip from
the Antarctic Ocean to visit the Ecuadorean coast in search of a partner.
The whales spend the northern summer in Antartctica feeding and by the
time they leave the icy polar seas on their migration north, their blubber
is 15-20cm thick.
Humpbacks got their name from the
humped dorsal fins and the way they arch when diving. Aside from acrobatic
antics, the whale watcher may even be treated to a song or two from the
multi talented humpbacks, who are also reowned for their vocal performances.
Chirrups, snores, purrs and haunting moans are all emitted by solitary males
eager to use their chat up techiques on a prospective mating partner.
