Shrimp for a better planet

Throwing the net to catch a sample of shrimp

SEE THE FIRST ORGANIC SHRIMP FARM IN THE WORLD.

This shrimp farm is located close to Bahia de Caraquez Ecocity  in the estuary of the Chone River. It is the first and only certified organic shrimp farm in the world. The methods used on the farm are based on principles of organic farming and permaculture.

The tour begins with a scenic drive along the estuary and through the tropical dry forest to the farm which is visually very different to the other farms seen en route, most farms are deserts, the organic one is brimming with vegetation, wildflowers, wildlife and a combination of attractive production areas in harmony with regeneration zones. Shrimp is not the only crop here, the dykes are used for growing aloe vera, papaya  and almonds, as well as seed producing trees which is harvested for the shrimp food itself. The lower part of the dykes are reserved for mangroves, the most important plant in the system, acting not only as a biofilter but as a food source. We visit the ecological staff house and the wildlife areas which are great for bird watchers. You`ll see the shrimp growing and understand the whole process from the larva to harvest. And lastly you can taste the shrimp and other surprise morsels from the ponds in a delicious farm lunch !

Tour of organic shrimp farm. Note the mangroves and vegetation growing on the dykes

On the way back to Bahia we pass by Encarnación, the agroecology project where organic produce is grown for the shrimp food. At the same site you can see worm farming, composting of the town`s organic waste, recycling of shrimp waste for fertilizer and cultivation of tropical crops.

This is a full day tour. Price depends on group size and includes lunch. Email for current prices.
